The Production Department works through the Program Department (encompassing the pillars of Performing & Visual Arts, Education, Religion, and Recreation)  to support and serve artists and creators at the Institution and our invited patrons, guests, and clients. Production brings others’ vision to life! The Production Team collaborates to create and synergize new relationships, systems, procedures, and experiences. 

Summary

The Audio-Visual Specialist will report to the Director of Production and have an integral role in operational initiatives aligned with the goals and objectives of the Institution’s 150 Forward Strategic Plan. This position will be responsible for fulfilling technical production needs and the newest team member will share perspective and experience in all of the technical ‘basics’ – understanding signal chains, formats, connectors, adaptors, microphones, calculating correct lens needs, power requirements, and the ‘alphabet soup’ of the industry (DP, DVI, WUXGA, VGA, XLR).

Responsibilities

  • Provide production and technical expertise to cross-functional and simultaneous operations, primarily during summer operations, where principal work occurs for Program, broadcast and live-streaming content for CHQ Assembly, and conferences or special events at the historic Athenaeum Hotel. 
  • Support programming across communities of artists and creators, campus groups, arts education, and recreation.
  • Use technology solutions to read and generate production plans, such as event layouts, using CAD.
  • Execute production plans, collaborate with teams, communicate plans to internal or external stakeholders, and adjust those plans as necessary, as instructed by the Director of Production
  • Operate and troubleshoot audio and visual equipment to meet production needs for productions, presentations, special functions, events, and/or meetings.
  • Supervise, support, train, and schedule a team of audio and visual technicians at various experience levels who work seasonally in production. Host and participate in regular meetings to influence open communication and enhance team performance within production.
  • Inventory in-house or rental equipment, supplies, networks, and software requesting routine maintenance, repair, or replacement as required to meet production needs.
  • Support identification of opportunities to promote revenue generation during the ‘off-season,’ including venue and studio rentals or artist residencies with a potential need for production and technical support.
  • Prioritize safety and a clean, organized work environment for teams within production or at events. Follow Occupational Health & Safety Act (OSHA) regulations, industry-specific safety guidelines, internal safety policies and procedures, and appropriate accident documentation for Worker’s Compensation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Dependable and reliable on an individual-basis and within teams. Punctuality is critical for production.
  • Technical savvy to utilize computers (Microsoft Suite) and equipment, software, and technology solutions used for production or organization-wide, such as Arts Vision.
  • Adaptation and problem-solving capabilities to identify complex problems, use critical thinking, logic, reasoning, and relevant information to evaluate options, and develop appropriate, effective solutions.
  • Project management capabilities to organize and navigate multiple projects, full cycle, simultaneously with experience in production processes, procedures, equipment, and technology.
  • Relationship-building expertise to provide leadership and support across interworking teams. Consultative and collaborative approach to in teams with a focus on positive results.
  • A life-long learner who is eager to maintain technical knowledge, establish professional and vendor networks, participate in industry-specific organizations, and attend conferences.

 

Education and Experience

  • 2-years of production experience with a focus on audio and visual systems, including installation and maintenance, is required with a preference for candidates with this experience in the Arts.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record is required to operate company vehicles and equipment.

 

Schedule

  • The Audio-Visual Specialist will work full-time with the necessary flexibility for a variable schedule that includes evenings and weekends (particularly during the summer operating season) with a willingness to work overtime based on business need. This position requires the performance of work onsite, as such, will be based in Chautauqua Institution’s home office, located in Southwestern New York.
