Program Duration: May 31, 2022 – August 19, 2022
INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:
Are you passionate about creative digital storytelling? Do you want to work on self-directed story ideas?
For this internship, you will be part of the Digital News team, where you will pitch, report and write stories for NPR’s website and learn what it takes to make those stories succeed across digital platforms.
Our journalists work fast and work smart to cover the news and find the best ways to get those stories to our audiences. This internship will have some overlap with the Platforms and Curation team, so you’ll have opportunities to identify trends that shape how and what we cover, help plan how your stories are promoted, analyze story performance, and apply what you learn.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Pitch and/or write assigned breaking news and original news feature stories and blog posts on a wide array of topics, guided by a team of experienced editors
- Suggest headlines and other display copy and plan visuals
- Assist reporters with research and reporting
- Participate in staff meetings and projects as required
- Help analyze story performance and derive lessons to inform best practices
WHO CAN APPLY?
- LOCATION: This internship has the flexibility to be on site at our Washington, D.C., office, fully remote, and/or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference.
- EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Good news judgment and an eye for interesting stories
- A demonstrated record of strong writing and storytelling
- Ability to work quickly and accurately on deadline
- Familiarity with content performance data and data analysis
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Strong research skills
- Knowledge of NPR programming
- In addition to the regular application items, candidates must upload/attach a writing sample.
SCHEDULE
- 40 hours per week, around the intern’s schedule. May include some weekend or evening shifts.
