Summary/Objective

Under the supervisor of the Engineer Supervisor, the Public Works Engineering Intern will work with assist the Engineering Division on plan review, quantity calculations, asset management, construction inspection and surveying. This internship opportunity will serve as a training ground for college level students enrolled in an civil engineering or related program. 

 

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Engineers with plan review, data gathering and analysis, and project files.
  • Assists the Construction Inspectors and Right of Way Technicians in the inspections including but not limited to streets, curbs, right of ways, sidewalks, driveways and storm sewers.
  • Assists the department in maintain and updating department topographic surveys of roads, storm sewers, traffic inventory and traffic counts. 
  • May assist the department in processing right of way permits. 
  • Employee may be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job. 

 

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Ability to process, prioritize and organize large and varying amounts of information with effective results.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results. 
  • Ability to avoid safety hazards. 
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team and/or with the public. 
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to make rational decisions efficiently during variable and sometimes stressful conditions, including the ability to calmly interact with the public and other City personnel.
  • Ability to process, prioritize and organize large and varying amounts of information with effective results.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including, Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Standard office procedures, systems and practices including the use of a computer.
  • Must have adequate environmental tolerance, including the ability to work in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, storms, heat, cold and any other weather indigenous to the area. 

Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level engineering or related degree program.
  • One (1) year of course work in civil engineering, preferred. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
