Engineering Technician II

Full Time

Salary Range: $20.2100 To 25.2400 Hourly

The City of Leawood, Kansas will be accepting applications for the Engineering Technician II until March 21, 2022. 

Salary Range:

$42,036.80 – $63,024.00

Summary/Objective

The Engineering Technician II is mid level technical position involved in the design and construction of capital improvement projects for streets, storm sewers, parks and/or facilities. Provides technical support for Engineering Division of Public Works regarding traffic and transportation, surveying, and computer-aided drafting. Provides limited stormwater detention review of residential permit plans. Engages in field operations support and other engineering reports and presentations as needed. 

 

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

  • Assists the Engineering Division of Public Works with providing technical reviews of preliminary and final plat submittals and revisions. Responsibilities include preparing topographic surveys and drawings for public improvement construction projects.
  • Assists with design of signing, marking and traffic control plans for City projects per national standards. Ensures pavement marking and signs are in compliance with accepted national and state standards.
  • Assists the Engineer in Training and Project Engineer(s) on field surveys, data collection, plan preparation, and studies. 
  • Responsible forthe collection and analysis of traffic flow and control data, including signing, sight distance, and signal warrant studies. Responsibilities include updating, reproducing and distributing maps showing annual traffic counts, school crossings, speed limits, signal locations and other traffic data inventory.
  • Completes turning movement counts at critical intersections.
  • Assists the Engineering Division in the research and preparation of department reports and plat submittals for compliance with City of Leawood Municipal Code, County requirements and State laws.
  • Assists the Public Works Department in maintaining the construction plan image database. Responsibilities include ensuring the necessary maintenance on the database is completed, documents and images are stored according to the Department process and procedures. 
  • Assists the Public Works Department in the updating of the City of Leawood Construction Standards.
  • Assists the Public Works Department and other City Departments in the reviewing legal descriptions and other development documents for survey descriptions of property and checking tract maps. 
  • Assists the Engineering Division in providing limited storm water detention review of residential permit plans for Planning and Codes Department. 
  • Employee may be asked by supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.

 

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to comprehend and evaluate highly complex technical reports and problems.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results.
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and with the public.
  • Proficient in the City’s Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software and Geographic Information System (GIS) software.
  • Proficient in the City’s Miovision camera or other electronic devices. 
  • Ability to understand the basic principles of Traffic Engineering. 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Standard office procedures, systems and practices including the use of a computer. 

 

 

Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as Engineering Technician or related experience. 
  • An Associates’ degree in engineering, computer-aided design, geographic information systems or related field is equivalent to two (2) years of experience. 
  • Must have Autodesk Associate Certification (CAD) from an accredited agency approved by the Director of Public Works. 
  • Must have an ESRI ArcGIS Desktop Entry Certification or equivalent certification from an accredited agency approved by the Director of Public Works. 
  • Must have or be able to obtain the Survey Technician I Certification through National Society of Professional Surveyors Program or equivalent certification from an accredited agency approved by the Public Works Director. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
