The City of Leawood, Kansas will be accepting applications for the Public Works Facility Technician until April 25, 2022.

The Facility Technician series is divided into 4 levels; Facility Technician I, Facility Technician II, Facility Technician III and Facility Technician IV.
Summary/Objective
The Facility Technician II performs moderate routine repairs and preventive maintenance, and assists the Building Maintenance Supervisor to ensure the safety and reliability of City owned facilities and equipment.
Essential Functions / Responsibilities
- Responsible for the routine repairs and preventative maintenance, on all City owned facilities and equipment to ensure the facilities and equipment are in working condition. Equipment includes but is not limited to heating and cooling, plumbing and electrical equipment.
- Responsible for performing interior and exterior construction duties including but not limited to moderate carpentry, drywall, masonry, roofing, concrete, wall coverings, painting, and floor coverings.
- Responsible for moderate maintenance and verifies operation of security, access and fire protection systems.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating work orders and keeping the Building Maintenance Supervisor or designee updated with a status report of work completed. Duties include providing daily status updates including steps taken, inspecting and evaluating work that needs repaired.
- Assists the Building Maintenance Supervisor in maintaining inventory and records of all City buildings, equipment, and building maintenance supplies.
- Assists the Department with inspections, replacements, installations, and repairs of various electrical devices including outlets, light fixtures, and switches. Responsible for diagnosing and troubleshooting moderate electrical defects found during inspection, replacement or installation. Assists Facility Technician Is with diagnosing minor electrical repairs.
- Conducts daily visual inspection of interior and exterior building lighting appliances. Responsible for completing necessary repairs or replacements of components, burnt out bulbs, ballast’s and plugs.
- Assists the Building Maintenance Supervisor in providing routine oversight of contractual janitorial staff.
- Performs light housekeeping around City facilities. Duties include cleaning up spills or water leaks, restocking toilet paper and hand sanitizers.
- Follows necessary safety procedures and protocols when using City equipment and vehicles.
- Ensures all division equipment including vehicles is in safe proper operating condition prior to use.
- Responsible for maintaining building maintenance records and protocols in various electronic and computer based software applications including but not limited to HVAC control programs, maintenance activity tracking software, and access control programs.
- Employee may be required to assist in snow removal and other extreme weather situations.
- May assist in the training of Facility Technician Is and acts as a resource.
- Employee may be asked by the supervisor to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.
Minimum Qualifications / Requirements
- Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results.
- Ability to fill out and submit job hazard analysis.
- Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
- Ability to understand and follow technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, charts, and diagrams.
- Ability to use safe work practices while on the job, including following proper and stablished procedures in the use of equipment, and wearing the appropriate and/or required safety and personal protective gear.
- Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of accepted building and trade practices codes tools, general related safety and hazards around machinery.
- Ability to use the City’s work management system.
- Must be proficient in the use of electronic and computer based software applications including HVAC control programs, maintenance activity tracking software and access control programs.
- Ability to use and understand Microsoft Office Word and Email.
- Must be able to work independently, as part of a team and/or with the public.
- Must be able to tolerate and work in confined spaces, vaults, or other areas.
- Must be able to work on facility roofs up to sixty (60) feet high.
- Must be able to withstand exposure to noise from equipment, machines, and vehicles.
- Must have adequate environmental tolerance, including the ability to work in variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, storms, heat, cold, and any other weather indigenous to the area.
Education, Training, and Certification Requirements
- Must have a minimum of four (4) years’ of experience in one of the following: building maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, plumbing or electrical. Experience in building maintenance, HVAC or electrical preferred.
- Must have or be able to obtain OSHA 10 training through an approved credentialing entity approved by the Public Works Superintendent.
- Must have or be able to obtain confined space certification meeting NFPA 1670 Awareness Level.
- Must have or be able to obtain Kansas State Certification in backflow prevention device inspection and repair.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.
