What is the Opportunity?

 

SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.

We offer many different opportunities including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and observing client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.

  • We are currently hiring into the following Latin America areas:

 

Corporate Banking (Latin America)

The Latin America Corporate Finance Group (LADA-CF) is responsible for structuring, executing and monitoring corporate finance transactions in Latin America. LADA-CF covers clients in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. The team is divided into three sector verticals: Natural Resources, Power & Utilities and Diversified Industries. Each vertical leverages its industry knowledge across the entire region. LADA-CF regularly collaborates with other teams across SMBC and SMBC Nikko, including Global Trade Finance, Loan Capital Markets, Debt Capital Markets, Investment Banking and US Private Placements.

 

Debt Capital Markets (Latin America)

The Debt Capital Markets – Latin America team focuses on all aspects of bond transactions including origination, structuring, documentation, marketing and placement across all industries and all currencies for the entire Latin American region. The team particularly focuses on Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Colombia.

 

Project Finance (Latin America)

SMBC has significant expertise in advising, structuring, arranging, underwriting and distributing project & structured finance loans and project bonds on a global scale. Along with other departments within SMBC and SMBC Nikko, we provide a variety of financing solutions for large scale infrastructure projects including conventional and renewable power plants, transmission lines, mining, oil and gas facilities, toll roads, ports, airports, bridges, data centers, fiber optic, and hospitals across Latin America. Our typical products are structuring of project finance, financial advisory to project developers, long / short term loan to project, large scale underwriting of the loans, bond (144A, US private placement) arrangement, Export Credit Agency financing and M&A.

How Our Program Works

 

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.

This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes: 

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2023 or May 2024; excellent academic record
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
  • Financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills; keen interest in finance and markets
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
  • Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
