SUMMARY

The Community Outreach Manager is a collaborative leader and community liaison in the Learning and Interpretation department, focused on providing access to art making experiences for youth and intergenerational audiences, with emphasis on the 2-mile radius around the Museum. Works collaboratively to establish relationships within the community and connect community partners with TMA resources, while overseeing part-time and full-time staff to facilitate the arts experiences. The Community Outreach Manager thinks creatively to produce new approaches to achieve outreach goals.

 

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • With the Senior Director of Learning & Interpretation and community partners, develops opportunities for arts engagement in the community with youth and intergenerational audiences, both on-site at TMA and off-site at community locations, focused on neighborhoods within a 2-mile radius of TMA.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Director of Learning & Interpretation to establish goals, objectives, strategies, and evaluation methods for Art Out of School experiences.
  • Promotes TMA’s outreach initiatives through communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains proactive communication with a portfolio of existing partners, responds to outreach requests and works with the Senior Director of Learning & Interpretation to establish new partnerships.
  • Participates in strategic planning for the objective of transitioning to active outreach model.
  • Supervises and mentor teaching artists who will facilitate Art Out of School art making and learning experiences; works with teaching artists to develop and approve curriculum and project plans for all programs.
  • Works with Human Resources to coordinate all necessary paperwork and information for new and returning teaching artists, including contracts and payroll information.
  • Provides administrative support to outreach programming, including scheduling, coordinating evaluation process with consultant, and maintaining records to provide information as requested for grant applications and reports.
  • Manages the budget for community outreach including tracking funding and paying expenses and operating within overall budget guidelines. May be asked to contribute to grant proposals and funding discussions.
  • Orders and organizes supplies and promotional materials as needed; manage supply inventory of all outreach supplies and materials.
  • As a public benefit corporation, the Museum always requires every staff member to act as a visitor advocate. This includes acknowledging visitors and striving to make them feel welcome, comfortable, and eager to return.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required. 

 

RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Senior Director of Learning & Interpretation. Supervises teaching artist(s) and works closely with community partners. Works regularly with other Learning & Interpretation staff, Belonging & Engagement staff, and across departments with other Museum staff as appropriate.

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, humanities, cultural studies, youth development or studio art required.
  • 2-3 years’ supervisory experience required.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in community development, community engagement, and/or arts engagement required; experience working with artists is a plus.

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based frameworks for youth development preferred.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work in a team-oriented environment and to work with people of a wide variety of ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle a varied workload, to multi-task, be detail-oriented with outstanding organizational skills and good follow-through. Must understand the urgency of deadlines and effectively complete time-sensitive tasks. 
  • Must be a self-starter able to identify projects/opportunities with partners.
  • Reliability and dependability must be able to attend sessions and work flexible hours (weekend and evenings required).
  • Ability to travel between TMA and off-site locations. A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are required.
  • Basic computer skills: ability to use internet and e-mail; knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Standard Museum gallery environment and open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer, and printer noise. Position requires ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery. Regularly work off-site at partner organizations to help facilitate programming.
