Job Title: Camp Counselor (Ages 18+)
Commitment: Seasonal Position (Summer) Part Time (Weekends)
Pay Range: $350.00 weekly stipend pay per session worked (Overnight Only)
Position Overview:
Welcome to Camp Idlewild of Florida! We are a Camp for children ages 6-17 & young adults ages 18-30 with special needs! We run camps year-round. We offer weekend residential camps during the school year, and weeklong residential camps during the summer months. We are looking for enthusiastic & passionate Camp Counselors to join our team!
What do Camp Idlewild Counselors do? They pack their bags and move into a cabin for the session duration. Each Counselor is assigned 3-5 campers to care for during the camp session. Counselors will be responsible for overseeing & getting involved with campers during activities and ensuring they don’t get lost or hurt!
Being reliable and able to build good relationships with children are two essential traits of a Camp Counselor. You don’t need to have expertise around outdoor activities, like hiking, canoeing or crafts. All our staff go through a week of training prior to campers arrival, so we will teach you all you need to know! If you’re patient, energetic, and passionate, we’d like to meet you!
Responsibilities:
- Participate & supervise campers during indoor activities (such as dancing, science, rainy day games)
- Supervise campers during cabin time, assist with daily routines & living (i.e; reminders to brush teeth, take showers, etc)
- Participate & supervise campers during recreational activities (such as swimming, sports or crafting)
- Escort and oversee children
- Ensure camper involvement & encourage campers through games and explorations
- Resolve occasional challenges between children and address behavioral issues
- Make sure all safety rules are followed
- Ensure assigned cabin is clean and that campers don’t litter recreational areas or nature
- Perform first aid or take care of injuries as needed (all staff will take CPR & First Aid Class during training week)
- Keep accurate incident/ behavior logs
- Complete Camper Evaluation Form after each session
- Assist in cleaning/wrap up in between each camp session
Skills
- Experience as Camp Counselor or similar role working with children is preferred
- Familiarity with camping and various outdoor activities is preferred
- Patient and reliable
- Organization and communication skills
- A love for children
- Energetic and positive personality
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities like hiking, running, crouching or carrying children)
- First aid- and CPR-certified preferred (if not, training will be done on site)
- High school diploma
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior camp experience and/or interest in camping programs is helpful
- Prior experience working with children or children with special needs is helpful
