Design. Act. Direct.
Discover yourself with FIU Theatre.
FIU Theatre guides students through the discovery of their unique artistic visions and helps them develop the skills to make them a reality. Through a rigorous course of study in the classroom and participation in a diverse mix of productions that address a variety of global perspectives, periods, and styles, students have the opportunity to explore acting, design and construction, play analysis and dramaturgy, history, directing, playwriting and stage management.
We present a season of four productions each year that serve as a laboratory for our students to put their learning into practice. In addition, students will have the ability to write, direct and perform in productions including our Student Theatre Lab, New Plays Festival, and a summer Alternative Theatre Festival. Our summer Alternative Theatre Festival includes a development project of a new work by an established playwright, a faculty directed piece, one student directed piece, and may include Alumni showcase and reunion productions.
Students are drawn to our program for many reasons, including the following:
FACULTY
Our faculty is experienced in a wide range of theatrical techniques and they bring this knowledge to the classroom. They continue to work in professional theatre and connect students to a theatre network extending across the country. Our program offers a high quality instruction taught by highly qualified faculty while giving every student personal attention.
PRACTICAL TRAINING/ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION
Our program balances practical instruction through a wide range of courses in theatre arts with academic understanding of the history and theory of the art form.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Our program offers opportunities to develop and engage in community projects that enrich the regional cultural landscape.
MENTORING
Our low student to teacher ratio allows our professors work closely with students as individuals to develop their unique artistic voices.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Our student body consists of a broad cross section of students from a variety of backgrounds and cultural traditions.
PRODUCTIONS
Actual production and performance experience is an essential part of a sound theatre education. There is ample opportunity for roles and key production assignments on the four faculty-directed Mainstage productions per year. Plays are selected to offer students the opportunity to work with a wide range of styles and periods, from contemporary to classical, straight drama, and musicals. Qualified students have opportunities to design Mainstage productions, direct in the Student Lab Theatre, and participate in the New Plays Festival and our summer Alternative Theatre Festival. Opportunities also exist to perform and participate in community and course related projects. Our theatre program regards its productions as an essential teaching laboratory for students and a source of meaningful entertainment for our community.
