Chair’s Special Message

Dear FIU Theatre Family,

Welcome back to another semester at FIU Theatre! I hope everyone had an opportunity to rest and enjoy the holidays with their loved ones.

As we begin a brand new year, I encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities you have as an FIU Theatre student, both in the classroom and through our productions.

This semester we have two exciting shows. We kick things off with the moving play, based on the international best-selling novel, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME. The play is being guest-directed by FIU Theatre alumna Victoria Collado. Our last play of the season is the riveting play THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA by one of Spain’s most important dramatists, Federico García Lorca. I know we are going to deliver a magical experience for our audiences and you will all grow immensely as theatre artists in the process.

If you need anything throughout the semester, I encourage you to reach out to your faculty. We all take our roles as mentors and guides very seriously and are committed to helping you get the most out of your training here.

If you have questions registering for classes or about planning for your graduation, please reach out to our new academic advisor, Jessica Amores Diaz at jamores@fiu.edu.

I also encourage you to get involved with our two student organizations. The Student Leadership Council provides a safe space and amplifies the voice of students that are underrepresented and unheard. Alpha Psi Omega is the national theatre honor society and they organize various activities throughout the semester that are fun and service-oriented.

I also remind you that although we’re back at the Wertheim for another semester, we’re not yet “back to normal.” As Covid cases and hospitalizations due to the omicron variant continue to increase in our community, it is important that we remain alert and work together to take the steps necessary to prevent further spread.

Creating theatre requires us to work very closely together and so we must be extra conscious to make the best choices possible to keep us all safe and healthy so that we can start and finish our semester focused on doing what we do best both in the classroom and on our stages.

If you aren’t already vaccinated, please give it serious consideration. Vaccines are effective at protecting you from COVID-19 and greatly reducing the chances of severe illness and hospitalization if contracted. Please visit http://go.fiu.edu/vaccine for more information and to schedule a convenient on-campus appointment today.

I also strongly encourage you to continue the use of masks and social distancing when indoors. These practices are aimed at keeping all of us safe and preventing further spread of the virus.

This is an evolving situation. The University continues to monitor developments and will communicate any important information as it becomes available. Please visit http://repopulation.fiu.edu for the latest information and University policies. Also, make sure you review your FIU email at least once a day for important updates from the University and the Department.

If we all work together, we can remain focused on our work: the exciting season we have ahead of us and your growth as theatre artists.

Let’s have a wonderful semester!
