BFI AND AST present FUTURE CITIES: MIAMI | RESEARCH INTENSIVE

October 21, 2017

A.S.T. (Alliance of the Southern Triangle) in partnership with BFI (Bas Fisher Invitational)
Miami

This Research Intensive will present a day-long workshop gathering artists, writers, scientists, and experts in the fields of infrastructure, terraforming, and water control – specific to Miami and South Florida – in order to imagine the future of the region and coastal cities beyond mere adaptation.

Lateral thinking in the field of art can enable the production and speculation of new ideas on the flows and formations of coastal cities. These flows do not require us to develop tactics to hold back the tide, rather they call for the rethinking of city structures amidsts the face of globalized hyper-economy impacted by climate change. Repurposed current state-infrastructures such as zoning, speculative real estate, and water— are projected into the future in order to create an alternative vision of our present.

Thus, the primary focus of this workshop is to generate a platform in which art is uniquely qualified, insofar that it can bring diverse ideas together and that interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration will be an essential part of carving useful paths forward— FUTURE CITIES: MIAMI | RESEARCH INTENSIVE is the beginning of this work.
