Mission:  The Miami Beach Urban Studios build upon the mission of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts by taking advantage of location, facilities, and resources in the heart of Miami Beach to use the power of architecture and the arts to engage local and global communities to create, innovate, and inspire solutions to social, economic, and environmental problems.

Vision:  To build upon the vision of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts by utilizing the innovation, community engagement, and expertise afforded by its participating faculty members, facilities, and location to be at the forefront of teaching, research, and service in art, design, performance, and communication.

The Miami Beach Urban Studios offer undergraduate and graduate students a unique opportunity to study in one of the most vibrant, artistic urban centers in the world for one semester, while gaining valuable professional experience at design firms, and by working with innovative public, private, and non-profit arts organizations throughout the city.

Located in the iconic Art Deco 420 Lincoln Road building, the Miami Beach Urban Studios give students and faculty access to Miami Beach’s burgeoning arts and design culture. For a brief, early, and growing history of the building click here: 420 Lincoln Road Building History.

The Miami Beach Urban Studios provide expansive space for design and fine arts students, practice and performance spaces for music and theatre students as well expansive gallery/exhibition spaces and classroom space for use by the entire College. The location is an ideal base for the study in arts, design and performance, for museum and gallery visits, and for exposure to the wealth of arts organizations located in Miami Beach. The Studios also offer a full roster of courses enriched by Miami Beach’s unique artistic, historical, and cultural resources and by the extensive network of noted professionals, artists and performers who serve as visiting critics and mentors.

The College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) engages our local and global communities by deploying the power of architecture + the arts to create, innovate, and inspire solutions to social, economic, and environmental problems. Unique in composition and mission, CARTA has offered degree programs in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design, Art + Art History, Communication Arts, Music, and Theatre for over ten years. As of 2016, we are excited to announce that FIU’s prestigious School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) has been integrated with CARTA, bringing degree programs in Communication and Journalism & Media.
