Skip to content MEDIA HUB Strategic Comunication Lab Newsroom WRITING LAB BROADCAST + TV PRODUCTION STUDIO RATCLIFFE ART + DESIGN INCUBATOR IMMERSIVE STUDIO FOR ALTERED REALITY LECTURE HALLS THE STUDENT FORUM Media Hub This nearly 5,000 sq. ft. space is comprised of the Department of Journalism + Media’s state-of-the-art faculty led, student digital content producing facility supporting experiential, hands-on student training. Home of the South Florida News Service and the South Florida Media Network as well as the Department of Communication’s Strategic Communication Lab. The lab houses the BOLD strategic communication agency, serves as a meeting place for students and faculty working on creative and strategic group-based projects and also serves as a multimedia classroom for graduate students in the Global Strategic Communication masters program. Button 1 Button 2 SFMN | Washington Bureau SFMN | Miami Bureau SFMN | New York Bureau Writing Lab With a student population mostly composed of first generation hyphenated Americans (Hispanics, Haitians, etc.) our mission has always emphasized the honing of strong writing skills. The Writing Lab will be directed by a faculty member with the assistance of trained writing coaches. Button 2 Button 1 Broadcast + TV Production Studio We are currently renovating the broadcasting facility with updated technology, equipment, and an integrated workflow. Our goal is to help students master visual storytelling skills through innovative collaborations with faculty and professional partners. In this setting, students will produce, write, direct and present TV programming through daily and weekly broadcasts. Button 2 Button 1 The Student Forum The heart of the South Florida Media News Complex, the 7,500 sq. ft. Student Forum is at the center of a more than 20,250 sq. ft. expanse that provides a home base for the 2,000 plus School of Communication + Journalism students. The forum helps ground our largely commuter student population with a space to work, collaborate, study and socialize. Button 2 Button 1 Lecture Halls Two back-to-back multimedia equipped, state-of-the-art lecture halls for large lecture courses such as, Mass Media Law and Ethics, Writing Fundamentals for Communicators and introductory courses. Button 2 Button 1 Immersive Studio for Altered Reality In partnership with virtual reality purveyor Bridgegate Pictures, the Immersive Studio for Altered Reality (iSTAR) provides communication students with vital career training in the creation of virtual reality and augmented reality storytelling techniques. iSTAR will feature a 180-degree theater, a production studio and post-production facility, classrooms and faculty offices. Button 2 Button 1 Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator Is an initiative aimed to promote and foster social entrepreneurship and innovation amongst upcoming FIU artists and designers. The incubator provides Ratcliffe fellows with essential tools to turn their ideas into profitable businesses. This unique program is one of the most innovative art + design entrepreneurship spaces housed at a public university. The Incubator is operated by two instructors who mentor students and oversee the students’ business development plans and/or patents. Button 2 Button 1 Faculty Composition The Journalism + Media faculty is composed of 15 full-time accomplished faculty members who balance academic learning and practical experience. Subjects such as multimedia journalism, visual storytelling, digital journalism, data visualization and analysis, television and radio broadcasting, documentary, social media, drones, digital and 360 photography ensure a well rounded student experience. In addition, the program has a Knight Foundation Innovator-In-Residence position and a Hearst Foundation Lecture Series. The faculty reflects the demographics of our student population and the community we serve. Students will develop semester long projects using the best practices of solutions journalism to investigate and provide in-depth coverage on a social problem. They will also work on several shorter news stories per month. With a grant from Alley Coworking Community, this solutions journalism initiative will be located in the Alley building in Chelsea and staffed by one faculty member and six students. Button 2 Button 1 Washington News Bureau Under the direction of FIU faculty bureau chiefs, the bureaus will partner with local media organizations to provide advanced undergraduate and graduate students with experiential learning opportunities enabling them to explore innovative ways of covering the news and telling impactful stories. They will also work on several shorter news stories per month. This scenic campus right on the bay is FIU’s second largest at nearly 200 acres and 7,000 students. BBC has its own vibrant campus life, student housing, library, and recreation center and is home to the FIU journalism, digital media, strategic communication, hospitality, and marine science programs. BBC partners with local institutions to offer innovative programs such as ROYAL@FIU World Stage Collaborative, with Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd., and MAST@FIU, with MAST Academy. By focusing on the millennial generation, on multilingual journalism and on stories other outlets have missed, SFNS helps weave the tapestry of our polyglot home. Now in its 8th year, the SFNS trains students by doing. By producing stories as bona fide members of the 4th Estate, our reporters learn more than they would in a traditional classroom. The multi-purpose lab houses the latest in information technology, digital media and multimedia and has been used for documentary film production, multi-platformed instruction, and was the original home of the department’s South Florida News Service.
