Kopenhaver Center Hosts Free, Career-Boosting Webinar

Dr. Susan Jacobson to discuss technology skills for professional women on Sept. 23

Susan Jacobson (Photo)NORTH MIAMI, FL – The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication invites professional women to attend the “How to Boost Your Tech Savvy and Enrich Your Career” webinar on Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.

The free lecture by School of Journalism and Mass Communications professor Dr. Susan Jacobson is the first in a series this academic year at Florida International University.

Jacobson will show busy professional women how to improve their technological skills in a fast-paced digital age. The presentation will include a discussion about which aspects of technology most benefit women seeking to advance their careers.

“I’m always very careful in how I invest my time,” said Jacobson. “I figured that it’s hard for me, and I’m pretty savvy.

“For women whom technology isn’t the central focus of their job, it must be impossible because you get inundated with

[new technology] and then next week it’s gone. If you’ve spent some time trying to learn it, then that’s a problem.”

Jacobson has worked in new media and technology her entire professional career. She holds a master’s degree from New York University’s top-ranked Interactive Telecommunications Program and a doctoral degree from New York University.

She researches how social media shapes the relationship between journalists and news audiences and the impact of new media on journalism and the expressive qualities of digital multimedia. Her work has been published in respected journals such as New Media and Society and the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media.

Participants can attend Jacobson’s talk in person at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus in Academic Building II, Room 161. The campus is at 3000 NE 151 St., North Miami. The webinar will also be viewable in real-time at https://connect.fiu.edu/kopenhavercenter.
