DENTON, Texas — Dr. Newly Paul, assistant professor at the University of North Texas Mayborn School of Journalism has been selected as the 2022 recipient of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Outstanding Early-Career Woman Scholar award.

Selected through a rigorous judging process by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Commission on the Status of Women, the award recognized excellence in research, teaching and professional endeavors by a scholar at the budding season of her career.

The judges were particularly impressed with Paul’s efforts to seek tangible solutions for the industry and her constant efforts to engage in expanding her skills. As one nomination letter stated, “One of Dr. Paul’s strengths is an ability to investigate current issues and produce timely,

interesting and useful research that is accessible to both scholars and a general audience.” During the pandemic, Dr. Paul wrote a blog post on how immigrant communities survived the lockdowns and her post on ethnic food blogs to build community support was so popular that she was invited to turn her blog post into an article for the Journal of Applied Communication Research.

Additionally, Dr. Paul has had an extensive research record – publishing over 20 articles in respected academic journals including Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly and Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.
