AEJMC Pre-Convention Workshop Women Faculty Moving Forward:

“Taking the Lead”

The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Pre-Convention Workshop Women Faculty Moving Forward: “Taking the Lead” was held in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, August 6, 2023.

Sponsored by the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women, the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University and the AEJMC Council of Affiliates. This eleventh workshop with accomplished academics will help early-career women faculty members move forward in their careers through mentoring, networking, and preparing for tenure and promotion and administration or other leadership positions.

The keynote speaker for the workshop was Maria Len-Rios, professor and associate director of Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Minnesota. Panelists included Jennifer Vardeman, director of Jack Valenti School of Communication, Houston; Jessica Retis, director of School of Journalism, Arizona; Meta Carstarphen, area head, strategic communication, Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Oklahoma; Katie Place, associate professor, strategic communication, Quinnipiac; and Juliet Pinto, associate professor, journalism, Penn State.
