Sigal Segev (Photo)NORTH MIAMI, FL – Dr. Sigal Segev, an assistant professor in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication (SJMC) at Florida International University (FIU), has been named Associate Director for Programming and Research at the school’s Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication.

“The appointment of Dr. Segev is an exciting development, and it goes a long way to make a reality the Center’s goal of advancing academic and professional opportunities for women in our industries,” said Dr. Raul Reis, dean of the SJMC. “We’re excited about the research and academic expertise Dr. Segev brings into the Center.”

Dr. Segev has been an active member of the Kopenhaver Center since its inauguration in 2012 where she worked with the center’s team on the formulation of the center’s mission, overall objectives, goals, and special programs for both the academic and professional communities. She also chairs the Research Forum, which strives to be the go-to destination for research on women in media and in communication education. Dr. Segev also directs the Communication Leadership Power Program, which offers SJMC students the opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue with leading professionals in the various fields of communication. Through its webinars and seminars the Kopenhaver Center provides the opportunity for future communicators to learn leadership and life skills from women who have been successful in their careers.

As the center’s new Associate Director for Programming and Research, Dr. Segev will have a greater hand in implementing new outreach programs meant to engage future generations of female leaders in the communications industry.

“I am very excited about this new role,” said Dr. Segev. “I look forward to continuing developing the center in the spirit of its mission, and building its brand through more initiatives directed at the professional and academic communities. I will work to further enhance awareness for the issues the center seeks to promote via its Leadership Webinars and Seminars, and to nurture the SJMC students through innovative programs and workshops. I am proud to be part of a team that works hard to make a difference in our community and the communication industry, and look forward to the opportunity to create more programs that encourage and empower women to be the leaders they strive to be.

“Earlier this year, we launched the Communication Leadership Power Program to better acquaint aspiring SJMC students and alumni with the center, and give them special access to the various events it has to offer. We will soon launch the Leadership Fellows Program, which is designed to match professional women at the beginning of their careers with seasoned communication professionals as mentors. We have many plans in store for this year; and each step we take forward is another in establishing the Kopenhaver Center as a valuable resource to both women and FIU.”

Dr. Segev has been a member of the SJMC family since Fall of 2007, where she has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses for the school’s Department of Advertising and Public Relations. Her research interests are in green advertising, new media, and multi-cultural communication. She holds a master’s degree in Advertising & Public Relations from FIU, and a Ph.D. in Communications from Leicester University, UK.

“As a new center within the FIU community, we have a lot to offer,” said Dr. Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver, executive director of the Kopenhaver Center. “I know that in her new position, Dr. Segev will continue to contribute her leadership and guidance to the work of the center. We value her commitment to our goals and to our ongoing mission to inspire, empower, and innovate.”
