Kopenhaver Center Hosts Workshop at AEJMC 2013 Conference

Workshop prepares women faculty members to advance their communication careers

NORTH MIAMI, FL – Florida International University’s Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication successfully hosted its first Women Faculty Moving Forward Pre-Convention Workshop during this year’s annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

The August event, co-sponsored by the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women and the AEJMC Council of Affiliates, is one of a series by the Kopenhaver Center to advance the professional growth of female academics in the field of communication. The inaugural workshop provided attendees with opportunities for networking and sessions on mentoring and career building. It also featured keynote speeches from Hagit Limor, professor of electronic media at the University of Cincinnati and former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists, and Dianne Lynch, president of Stephens College.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with the outcome and positive feedback we received about the workshop at the AEJMC Conference,” says Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver, executive director of the Kopenhaver Center. “An event like this encapsulates the center’s mission and goals of fostering the next generation of women scholars and professionals. We need to continue moving forward and empowering each other, to empower ourselves, and to nurture the future women leaders of the communications fields.”

Faculty members who completed the workshop were awarded certificates and named Kopenhaver Center Fellows.

“I am honored to be a part of

[the Kopenhaver Center]. I found the Center’s activities to be fun, inspiring, and uplifting,” said Emily Metzgar, assistant professor at Indiana University. “I look forward to staying involved with the center and its wonderful mission.”

Along with workshops, the Kopenhaver Center offers opportunities for thought leadership and advancement through its Leadership Development Seminar Series. It brings speakers to the center to discuss topics of value in the field of communication to women professionals and scholars. The Leadership Webinar Series features personal interviews with the nation’s top female leaders in communication. The Kopenhaver Center is also compiling a database of articles through its Women and Mass Communication Research Forum to serve as a go-to destination for the latest research.
