Journalism Program Manager | Scipps Howard Fund

Scripps Hunter Allison 8278 (Small)

Allison Hunter is the Scripps Howard Fund’s Journalism Program Manager. She’s excited to leverage her team building and communication skills to benefit education-based initiatives and their students.

Allison developed her joy of working on behalf of emerging professionals when she served as a journalism instructor and editor-in-chief of WOUB Public Media, a PBS and NPR licensee. There, she managed a small staff of professionals and the “learning lab” environment for the Ohio University students who volunteered in that multimedia newsroom. She remains proud of the experiential learning initiatives she spearheaded and helped develop including, the semester-long professionals-in-training bootcamp (PITcamp), an LGBTQ Media Action course, and the station’s paid summer internship program. Allison and her team didn’t just train young journalists, they invested time and energy into their personal development as individuals. While on campus, Allison also served as a mentor for the Women’s Center. Allison’s commitment to the “adultlings” was rewarded in 2019 when Ohio University’s Multicultural Center students chose her as the keynote speaker for their Kushinda/Ritos de Pasaje graduation ceremony.

Prior to working in higher education, Allison created more than 3000 hours of live broadcasts and managed staff in some of the nation’s busiest newsrooms, including Chicago’s WGN-TV and KTLA in Los Angeles. She also produced the startup newscasts on WXIX (Cincinnati) and WOIO (Cleveland), an award-winning independent film (DARK), commercials, and the Emmy-award winning, Chicago-based public-affairs broadcast, Off 63rd.

Allison attributes her career success to her hard work, the degrees she earned at Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism (B.S. ’89, M.S. ‘14), her family, and “The A-Team” – because she lives by the words, “I love it when a plan comes together.”
