A momentous occasion. On October 3rd, FIU welcomed writers to its 50th anniversary at the Modesto Campus. Among 800 enthusiastic middle school and high school student journalists at the 50th FIU Journalism Day, opening remarks were led by Dean Schriner and Dr. Kopenhaver, the founder of Journalism Day. The Keynote speaker this year was Jason Jackson, American sports commentator, mostly recognized for his reporting for the Miami Heat, who highlighted his personal experience in broadcasting.

Dean Brian Schriner announced the new Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Journalism Scholarship in recognition of Dr. Kopenhaver founding of FIU/South Florida Journalism Day 50 years ago. The LLK Journalism Scholarship will be awarded to students pursuing degrees at the School of Communication + Journalism who have previously attended Journalism Day.

Of the announcements, Dr. Kopenhaver said, “I was truly surprised and so honored that a scholarship in my name was announced by Dean Schriner at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of South Florida Journalism Day. I’m absolutely thrilled that we can help future students get a wonderful education in our School of Communication and Journalism”.
