Mya Calderon

Maya Calderon 1

Mya Calderon is a first-generation college student from a predominately white small town in Southwest Minnesota – small meaning a population of around 500. She graduated with academic honors as the only Black person in her high school, facing a great deal of adversity that she overcame with strength and the support of her mom.

Calderon’s passion for writing comes from wanting to give a voice to the voiceless, connecting with new people, and sharing stories that have an impact no matter how big or small that impact is. It also comes from her own chemistry teacher telling her science wasn’t for her – which she found to be very true. The same goes for math.

After graduating high school, Calderon moved to New Jersey to attend Rowan University. Graduating in May 2022, she is earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in psychology. She will also be earning a certification in public relations and creative writing. While at Rowan, she has contributed to numerous stories for the school’s newspaper, The Whit.

Calderon views herself as a determined, hardworking, and caring individual who loves to write, read, and listen to others and, of course, her cat too. Experienced in reporting, audio editing, interviewing and more, she hopes to work for a magazine company after graduating. Magazines such as Philadelphia Magazine, Rolling Stone and Essence are on her radar, but she doesn’t want to stop there. She hopes to cover many topics as a journalist and work for various publications to further build her experience and is eager to do so.
