FEMS IN TECH WEBSITE

Women in technology have historically been underrepresented, and a clear opportunity for impactful change is in view if we empower women to take on and take charge of the digital world.

Digital transformation is everywhere in both the public and private sectors. Hence, every organization’s success depends on its ability to execute digitally and continue offerings in the technological platforms of the future.

According to the SKILLSOFT 2021 Women in Tech Report, representation of women in technology has lagged behind that of their male counterparts; as a group, the trend of female participation in technology spans from 7% to 27% in the past 50 years — a minority in tech for decades (US Department of Labor, 2021).

“Through advocacy and education, we can empower women to advance within their careers by embracing tech-related skills and by providing opportunities to upskill so that they may reach their academic and professional goals. When women prosper in the labor force, society wins”, stated Dr. Lillian A. Abreu, Assistant Director and Research Associate at the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication.

Fems In Tech is a collective of female students, alumni, faculty, and community partners led by Lillian A. Abreu, Ph.D., Assistant Director | Research Associate for the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, who aim to advocate for female techquity and bring awareness to the disparities that exist for women in the field of communication and technology.

Coming Soon: Our featured student project for eMerge Americas 2023, where students produced an annual podcast and communication deliverables incorporating elements of Chat GPT and Dall-e, two examples of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This experiential ground-breaking project and the usage of these tools act as a testing ground for students to learn the newest AI innovations in the field of communication.

One of the key components of CARTA’s Technology, Innovation, and Education Strategic Plan is our strengthening and expanding our public-private partnerships -- ensuring our nationally ranked programs are driving the tech, innovation, and creative economy – creating a pipeline of highly-skilled graduates who are both FILLING and CREATING jobs.

We are fully committed to TechQUITY -- to narrowing our communities’ digital divide enhancing virtual and distant education opportunities for all students and offering nationally ranked degree programs that provide our graduates with a seamless transition from the university to their chosen profession.

                                                             - Brian Schriner, Dean of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts

FIU | CARTA + Miami-Dade County // Future Ready

We innovate. We inspire. We create.  Florida International University's,  College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA), is among the top 11 most innovative public universities in the US according to World Universities with Real Impact. By attending eMerge Americas, Miami's leading tech conference, FIU is able to further its strategic goal of preparing the future digital workforce. Carlos Fueyo, the James L. Knight Innovator in Residence at CARTA, will be featured thanks to a partnership between Miami-Dade County and Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts.  The first university dean to exist in the real Metaverse as a metahuman was brought to life thanks to Mr. Fueyo's skills as the creative director of Playard Studios and the virtual production creative director at Eyeline Studios (NETFLIX).

One way that virtual production can influence Miami-Dade's creative economy in the future and connect the multimedia arts sector with local talent to support economic and workforce development is by exposing our students and community to this cutting-edge technology. Becoming an opportunity generator and transforming lives right here in Miami-Dade County. This partnership reflects Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava's strategic plan of being FutureReady and connecting our local talent to in-demand jobs, including those at the intersection of technology, art, and creativity.

The FIU CARTA Caplin Immersive Studio for Altered Reality (iSTAR) is another example of our continued commitment to access to excellence and techquity at FIU. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Caplin and the expertise of our faculty and staff, we are able to establish ourselves at the forefront of these emerging immersive technologies and better prepare our students to be leaders in the growing tech industry. Currently ranked as the nation’s most innovative college by World Universities With Real Impact, CARTA faculty, staff, and students are truly Creative Forces At Work.

The FIU CARTA Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication FemsInTech initiative group of female students, faculty, and staff committed to empowering the role of women in technology, addressing the issue of the disparities that exist for women in technology. FemsInTech wants to contribute to reducing the significant underrepresentation of women in technology.  The FemsInTech team will speak with female technology leaders at the eMerge Americas conference this year about their solutions for improving the representation of women in the tech industry.  Students will test Chat GPT and Dall-e, two examples of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. These ground-breaking tools will not only support the storytelling process creatively, but they will also act as a testing ground for the newest AI innovations in this field.

These three intriguing programs are just a small sampling of the educational opportunities available to students within CARTA who want to prepare them for careers in leadership in the information and innovation economy of the twenty-first century. Thus, regardless of the industry, we aspire to develop the talent that will keep pushing the limits of what is possible through technology and creativity.
