The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Pre-Convention Workshop Women Faculty Moving Forward: “The Future is Female” was held in Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.
Sponsored by the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women, the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University and the AEJMC Council of Affiliates. This tenth workshop with accomplished academics will help early-career women faculty members move forward in their careers through mentoring, networking and preparing for tenure and promotion and administration or other leadership positions.
Keynote speaker for the workshop was Lucy A. Dalglish, dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, Maryland, and Scripps Howard Administrator of the Year for 2021; Jennifer Vardeman, director of the Jack Valenti School of Communication, Houston; Kathleen McElroy, director of the School of Journalism, Texas at Austin; Erika Engstrom, director of the School of Journalism, Kentucky; Young Volz, faculty group chair, Journalism Studies, Missouri; and Meta Carstarphen, Gaylord Family Professor/Strategic Communication, Oklahoma.
