Getting a Degree in Communications? Here’s Everything You Need to Know!

Ok, so you know a master’s in communications is what you need to jumpstart your career in PR and advertising… but what exactly does a master’s degree in communications entail? Every school is different, so what you get from a particular program depends on the school you attend and what you want to do with your degree when you graduate. Like every other educational program, you’ll get from the program what you put into it. That’s why it’s so important to have a good idea of what you want to do with your degree before you commit your time and money to an institution.

About Global Strategic Communications Creative Track Master’s Degree Program

The Global Strategic Communication Creative Track is a 39-credit hour program leading to a Master of Science in Mass Communication degree. This interdisciplinary program combines Florida International University’s Global Strategic Communications graduate curriculum in communications theory, research, and strategy with Miami Ad School’s advanced skills curriculum in Copywriting and Art Direction.

This program is designed for creative students who have completed an undergraduate degree. Students who are accepted into the program will learn advanced art direction and copywriting skills.

How Long Does The Program Take To Complete?

The program is completed in 5 consecutive semesters, including summers (19 months). There is no flexible-curriculum available. The school enrolls and selects the schedules for students. 7 courses are completed at FIU and 6 courses are completed at Miami Ad School.

What Classes Do You Take?

FIU’s Global Strategic Communications Creative Track program doesn’t teach students anything they already know—it expands on the knowledge and experiences students already have by diving deeper into the concepts and theories associated with communications, advertising, and marketing.

The courses are advanced, in-depth, and unique. The lock-step program is designed in conjunction with the Miami Ad School, which means students are required to take courses at FIU’s Biscayne Bay campus in North Miami and at Miami Ad School in Wynwood. Courses provide students with solid understandings of communications theory, global and multicultural consumers, research methods, and creative strategies.

Who Teaches The Courses?

The professors who teach students in FIU’s GSC program have worked in communications and other creative fields, like marketing and advertising, for years.

Who Should Apply?

If you aspire to be an art director or copywriter, then this program is a great option for your continuing education. The Creative Track program focuses on developing a global perspective in strategic communications through the development of trained art directors and copywriters.
