Brooke Erin Duffy (Photo)Brooke Erin Duffy, an assistant professor at Temple University’s School of Media and Communication, is the winner of the 2014 Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Outstanding Junior Scholar Award.

Kopenhaver, dean emeritus and professor at Florida International University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will present the award on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at the 2014 AEJMC Conference at Le Centre Sheraton in Montréal, Canada. AEJMC, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, is a nonprofit organization for journalism and mass communication scholars, educators, students and professionals.

Duffy, a member of the advertising faculty at Temple, uses a feminist media approach in her research, which focuses on media, gender and digital culture. Her 2013 book, “Remake, Remodel: Women’s Magazines in the Digital Age,” was published by University of Illinois Press and focuses on women working in media and culture industries. She also is in the process of interviewing women amateur creative workers for a book project that focuses on gender and labor in the digital age. She has co-edited a book, “Key Readings in Mass Media Today: Mass Communication in Contexts,” published in 2009 by Routledge. She also has published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on cultural production and gender.

The judges were impressed by her volume of work, its significance to the field, and its influence on other scholars who have cited her scholarship.

Duffy holds a Ph.D. from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a M.A. in communication from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in advertising from Pennsylvania State University. She also worked in media relations at Yale University and as an external affairs writer at the University of Pennsylvania.

This is the first year the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Outstanding Junior Scholar Award has been given. Kopenhaver, executive director of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University, and the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women founded the award to honor a woman junior scholar who demonstrates outstanding research and great potential for future scholarship. The winner receives a $250 check and a certificate.
