How To Manage Your Time

Time management is a skill everyone struggles with especially college students. When you first start your undergrad you begin to understand how to manage your time, but when it comes to the workplace and grad school- you have to be a pro. Here are some ways I manage my time portrayed through one of my favorite web comics.

Make a Schedule.
This is the best way to stay organized. Write everything down, that way you don’t cross-schedule two meetings at the same time or forget to be somewhere. Whether you use an agenda notebook or the calendar on your phone, it’s important to keep it up-to-date and use it daily.

Maintain your daily routine.
Sometimes if I have a test coming up I quiz myself to see how much I can remember while I’m taking a shower and getting ready for the day. The more you think about it the more you will remember it.

Don’t Procrastinate.
Sometimes working under pressure helps the creative process, but try to avoid procrastination as much as you can. Planning ahead can help eliminate the stress that comes with waiting until the night before.

When you hit a writing block, take a break.
If you have a lot to do and you get stuck on something, don’t waste time trying to think too much. Take some time away, go for a walk, get some brain food, or work on something else and then come back to it.

Unplug from the world.
Avoid getting distracted by Facebook, Twitter, etc. as much as possible. It helps to turn off the wi-fi or use sites that block these sites like SelfControl or FocalFilter. When you unplug you can get a lot more things done.

Get a good nights sleep.
I have pulled a few all-nighters before because I would wait until the last minute to work on a project, but it’s so important to make sure you go to bed at a decent time. I try to get around 7-9 hours of sleep at night, that is when I work at my best.
