3 Common Misconceptions People Have About Getting a Master’s Degree in The Creative Field

Global Strategic Communications Master’s Program With Hands-On Classes and InternshipsChoosing to go back to school after college is a big decision. Whether you are going to medical school, law school, or pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing, you are committing a lot of time and money to your desired profession.

Attending medical school and grad school for a degree in a creative field, like advertising, are clearly not the same. However, you’d be surprised to learn how many misconceptions concerning the two fields are the same. We’ve come up with a list of 3 misconceptions people often have about pursuing a master’s degree in a creative field.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a Related Field is Required

Who knows, maybe when you were 18 you really did believe that a high school teacher was what you wanted to be and now that you’re 22 or 47 you know advertising is the field you’d rather be in. First things first: It’s never too late to be what you want to be and it’s never too late to go back to school. But also, if you received your undergraduate degree in something other than Public Relations and Advertising or Marketing, then you can still apply for a master’s program like FIU’s Global Strategic Communications – Creative Track and be accepted.

Admissions committees value more than the subjects of undergraduate degrees and grade point averages. They truly value people with diverse experiences and what applicants can bring to the table in regards to the program.

  • Anyone Who Applies Will Be Admitted

On the other hand, it’s still a master’s degree program—just because you apply, it doesn’t mean you’ll get accepted automatically! In addition to looking at grades and past experiences, like jobs and internships, admissions committees will take into account letters of recommendation, essays, and the courses you took. One good thing to keep in mind is admissions committees are looking for reasons to accept you into the program, not keep you out! So put your best foot forward with your application and show them who you are, what you know, and what you can do.

  • A Master’s Degree Will Get You A Job

Getting a master’s degree will 100% open up the job pool, but the degree can’t guarantee you a job. School is expensive and it takes up so much time, but the rewards can be substantial—you just have to determine if the rewards are worth the time and money!

FIU’s Global Strategic Communications – Creative Track program offers unmatchable education and experiences to its students that puts them years ahead of their peers who start in advertising right after undergrad.
