Completed bachelor’s degree, a portfolio of 20 works that go beyond classroom assignments in quality and conceptual generation, statement of intention and goals for graduate study, Curriculum Vita, 3 letters of recommendation.

Reviewed by the faculty members in Studio Art disciplines.

Career Objective:

Practicing Artist. University Professor. Opportunity to apply the degree skill sets outside of the field in numerous creative industries.

Note: MFA is accepted as credential for university, college, and K-12 teaching; a State of Florida Teaching Certificate is also required by public schools.

Continuing Education After Completion:  

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is the terminal degree in studio art practice.

Note: Some institutions now also offer a PhD in Art which is a terminal degree with an emphasis in Contemporary Theory balanced with studio practice.

Provides coursework in both art and education to prepare individuals for certification and teaching at the K-12 level

Degree program hours: 54

Who should apply:

Individuals who want to be a K-12 art educator but who are not certified.

Items needed to apply:

A GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 semester hours of upper-division undergraduate study, 2 letters of recommendation, resume, a statement of goals of graduate study, portfolio of 15 images.

Reviewed by the Art Education professor.

Career Objective:

Art educator at the elementary, middle, or high school level in public or private schools K-12. Opportunity to apply the degree skill sets outside of the field in numerous creative industries.

Continuing Education After Completion:

The PhD and EdD are the terminal degrees in Art Education.

Who should apply:

Individuals who already hold the Florida State certification to teach art, but are desiring to continue their education and increase their position ranking.

Items needed to apply:

A GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 semester hours of upper-division undergraduate study, 2 letters of recommendation, resume, a statement of goals of graduate study, portfolio of 15 images.

Reviewed by the Art Education professor.

Art educator at the elementary, middle, or high school level in public or private schools K-12. Opportunity to apply the degree skill sets outside of the field in numerous creative industries.

Students will be allowed to take up to 12 credits of graduate courses which will apply toward both their undergraduate and their master’s degree program.

Who should apply:

Undergraduate students who want to be a K-12 art teacher – organized and disciplined students who can manage taking graduate and undergraduate classes at the same time.

Items needed to apply:

Completion of at least 75 credits, 3.2 overall GPA, Portfolio of 15 images.
