Keynote Title: “Beyond the Building: Global to Local Practice”

“I believe architects have a responsibility to teach the tangible and intangible capabilities of architecture.”

Originally from Virginia, Chris garnered his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia, and after working in Marketing for the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., he completed his Master of Architecture degree from Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP). There he received the Lucille Smyser Lowenfish Memorial Prize. Prior to working at the Hudson Valley Design Lab for MASS, he worked with Dean/Wolf Architects as an associate partner where he conducted a series of award-winning projects in all stages of design and construction. Most recently, “Restless Response: Emergency Medical Station 50” at Queens Hospital garnered the American Architecture Prize Gold Medal in Institutional Architecture in 2016, and the station was just featured in Architectural Record in March 2017.  Additionally, “Ephemeral Edge House,” a rural retreat home south of Albany won a Progressive Architecture Award in 2012 and nears completion.

Chris remains committed to design education as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Urban Design at Columbia GSAPP, and in the Pratt Institute’s Graduate Architecture and Urban Design program. His teaching research focuses on experimentation with 3D modeling and animation software, which helped him develop curricula in advanced urban design studio that he’s been teaching since 2012. Throughout his academic work, he explored cinematic studies of contemporary urbanism as a collective body of inquiries and techniques that pivoted the research at the University of Virginia, the National Building Museum, and Ïzmir University of Economics (Turkey).

“Architecture is never neutral. It either heals or hurts. Our mission is to research, build, and advocate for architecture that promotes justice and human dignity.”

Carlos Fueyo
Carlos FueyoCreative Director, FIU Alumnus | playard studios
Spotlight Title: “Designing Cinematography”

Carlos Fueyo is the creative director of playard studios, a production, postproduction, and visual effects studio based in Miami. He has over 15 years of experience working on film, commercials, game cinematics, and dark rides. Fueyo arrived to the United States from his native Spain when he was 15 years old. Here, he attended Florida International University, where he earned a degree in Architecture. With a strong background in art and design, he relocated to Los Angeles where he worked on major motion pictures such as Avengers: Age of Ultron, Super8, Priest, and Independence Day. As a VFX Supervisor, Carlos helped bring environments and characters to life by designing, modeling, lighting, texturing, compositing, and animating. He also played an integral part, on and off set, in the creation of visual effects for other recognizable films such as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, After Earth, Jane Got a Gun, and Terminator: Genesis.

A culmination of experience in the entertainment, technical, and digital worlds have allowed him to integrate the two things he loves the most: architecture and film. His company, playard studios, is a newly formed production studio that is currently experimenting with multimedia content including film, commercials, AR/VR/XR, visual effects, and product prototyping.

Malcolm Berg
Malcolm BergPrincipal, Owner | EoA, Inc.
101 Workshop:
Grounding Boundaries: An Interdisciplinary Approach

Malcolm Berg is the founder, President and Design Director of EoA, Inc. Malcolm received his Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with Concentration in Architecture, from the Massachusetts College of Art.

His strong visual arts background, paired with a Master’s thesis which eroded thresholds between architecture and landscape, developed into a strong career in experiential design.  To that end, Resort Hospitality design emerged as a distilled medium to bring Architecture, Landscape and Interior Design into one experiential discipline.

His focus on design is unequivocally about the narrative, about the human element – about the intimate relationship people have with their environment.

“There’s a story in every project, or at least there should be. The story is not about the Architecture, nor about the furniture or the artwork. It is about the dialogue, about the synergy created by disparate components in any landscape. It is about cinematic envelopment, about sensorial stimulation – about creating a mental image of a liquid moment. To that end I founded Edge of Architecture, to bridge the gap between disciplines, to bring the focus back to narrative, to the human element – and to the intimate relationship people ultimately have with their environment.”

Christopher Counts
Christopher CountsPrincipal, Landscape Architecture | Perkins & Will
101 Workshop:
Contour Conscious: Design With Form for Function

A fourth-generation native of South Carolina and former New York City resident, Christopher now lives in Miami, helping to lead our firm’s Landscape Architecture practice. His commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change on cities brought him to South Florida for a ground-zero examination of sea level rise and extreme weather conditions.

Having traveled to dozens of cities around the world, Christopher has a unique awareness of urban challenges faced by different populations. He believes that carefully thought-out, well-executed urban planning and landscape design are the glue that unites architecture, people, and ecology in successful cities. He designs spaces around the physical experience, considering the ways in which a user’s encounter with a place evolves over time.

Christopher’s innovative approach to resilient design earned him the prestigious Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture—a highly competitive fellowship awarded for excellence in the arts and humanities.
