Praised by the South Florida Classical Review for her “dazzling” and “incisive” performance, Dr. Karlyn Viña is a dynamic and creative percussionist based in South Florida. As a performer, Karlyn has a passion for solo, chamber, and orchestral percussion, with a particular interest in contemporary music.  Karlyn has an active freelance career in South Florida, performing regularly with the Palm Beach Symphony and Florida Grand Opera.

Dr. Viña is proud to serve on the faculty of Florida International University, New World School of the Arts, and Broward College, and also works with percussion students in Miami Music Project, South Florida Youth Symphony, and several school programs in both Miami-Dade County and Broward County.  Additionally, she maintains a busy private studio in South Florida, teaching concert percussion, keyboard percussion, timpani, and drum set.  Karlyn serves on the Percussive Arts Society’s Education Committee, has been published in the PAS Educators’ Companion, and can be heard as a co-host on the @Percussion Podcast. During the summers, Karlyn serves as a percussion faculty member at Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, MI.

Karlyn earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance from the University of Miami as a fellow of the Henry Mancini Institute.  Her dissertation focuses on the performance of works for theatrical percussion.  She also holds degrees in Percussion Performance and Music Education from The Boston Conservatory and the University of Maryland.  Karlyn is a Marimba One Educational Artist and Grover Pro Percussion Artist Endorser.
