“Music and Film”

Guest Speaker: Jan Jirásek, Renowned Czech Composer 

Born in Rychnov nad Kneznou, Czech Republic, Jan Jirasek graduated at the Janáček Academy of Musical Art in Brno (JAMU), studying composition with Zdenek Zouhar as well as electro-acoustic, computer music and theory. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, Jirasek’s music was widely performed: Bread and Circuses (Munich bienale, 1992), a postmodern recomposition of J.S.Bach’s St.Luke Passion (Munich bienale, 1996, Minneapolis 2000), Dance with the Universe (Portland Chamber Orchestra, 2012), Missa propria (Prague Spring Festival 1994 and 2014, Carnegie Hall, Avignon Festival, Francie e.g.), Fragile Balance/Letter to Heaven ( Atlanta 2012), and King Lavra (New York, 2013).
