A Degree in Musical Theatre

Study with our faculty in private lessons, workshop classes, lecture classes, and masterclasses as you gain onstage intensive performance training in voice, acting, and dance along with a full liberal arts education. Our low student/faculty ratio results in focused study tailored to your needs. You will be prepared to pursue positions as performers, musicians, conductors, and musical directors within musical theatre related programs, productions, and organizations.

B.M. in Musical Theatre

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Musical Theatre is designed for students who to want to exhibit performance potential in the musical theatre genre. The degree programs teaches music majors and musicians how to hone their musicianship skills and learn how to act the musical score. The B.M. in Musical Theatre will train musicians for not only performance roles on stage, but will train them for possible positions as music composers, music librettists, music directors, and music orchestral, chamber and choral conductors.

M.M. in Musical Theatre

The Master of Music (M.M.) in Musical Theatre focuses on developing skills needed to pursue careers as performers, but also skills needed for conducting, music directing and teaching in the musical theatre genre. Students will have onstage opportunities for their own personal performance development as well as access to valuable pedagogical training to prepare for careers as future musical theatre educators.

4 + 1 Combined B.M. & M.M. in Musical Theatre

The 4+1 Combined Degree program is designed for students who wish to complete both their BM and MM in Musical Theatre at FIU. The combined program focuses on training musicians for performance roles on stage, but also for careers as composers, librettists, conductors, music directors and musical theatre educators.

Admission Requirements

  • Current overall GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Completed at least 75 credit hours
  • Two letters of recommendation from FIU Faculty
  • Submission of acceptable writing sample, complete with bibliography to vocal performance area coordinator at music@fiu.edu.

Senior Year

  • In their senior year, students will compete 5000 level courses, the vocal exit requirements, and senior recital
  • Students must apply for graduation so that they will receive the B.M. at the end of their senior year.
  • All students must complete the M.M credits within one year of receiving the B.M. in Music at FIU.

Pre-Screening Materials to Submit on GetAcceptd

Pre-screening requirements are the same for both BM and MM degrees in Musical Theatre.

Upload the following to GetAcceptd:

  1. Resume
  2. Headshot
  3. Musical selections: 
    1. Submit two contrasting musical theatre song cuts from two different eras, one contemporary and one Golden Age You may use an accompaniment track or live pianist for your pre-screening video submission. No unaccompanied videos will be considered. Songs must be sung from memory.
  4. Monologue: 
    Submit a one-minute memorized monologue from a published play.
  5. Dance: 
    Perform a one-minute dance of your choosing; suggested genres are contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, ballet or tap. You should be the only one dancing in the video.
  6. Wild Card Video: 
    Submit a short video that shows something unique about you such as a special skill or interest.

BM Live Audition Requirements:
