AT THE 2022 EMMY AWARDS, TWO RECENT JOURNALISM + MEDIA ALUMNI TAKE HOME THE WIN!

Andrea Igliozzi, a class of 2020 alumna, took home two wins at this year’s regional Emmy Awards. Her first award was in the category of “Environment/Science-Spanish” for her in-depth coverage on pollution in the Sacramento River, and a second win came in the “Continuing Coverage – Spanish” category for her work of the Dixie wildfire in California. For the Venezuelan native who at one point had to pause her university studies to help her family through difficult financial times, the success of her Emmy wins is even more significant and cherished. “I have dreamed of this moment since I was a kid,” Andrea wrote in her native Spanish on her Instagram account, “and this is proof that dreams do come true!”

During her undergraduate studies at FIU, Andrea was one of only 20 students selected to participate in the inaugural semester of the Univision STEP program, an exclusive experiential-learning partnership between the Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media and Univision launched in Spring 2020. Andrea was a top performer who was highly regarded by the Univision team, and was asked to stay for an additional semester during summer 2020 as part of the program’s SWAT (Student Work and Advanced Training) extension.  Following that, she was offered a full-time position within the Univision organization and currently works as a reporter for Univision 19 in Sacramento (California).

Like Andrea, Yaimee Bell was a participant in the Univision STEP program and its SWAT extension while completing her master’s degree in the Spanish-Language Journalism program. Yaimee is Cuban native who came to the U.S. to pursue the “American dream” only six years ago. As a STEP participant, she served on Univision’s social media multi-market team as a graphic designer and social media editor creating content, writing and monitoring the impact of #Destino2020, a social media political coverage initiative supporting all Univision local stations during the election campaign season.

Yaimee never imagined that only two years later she would be working at Telemundo Nevada as a multimedia journalist, receive a nomination for three Emmy awards and walk away with a win in the “Arts/Entertainment – News” category for her coverage of street art in Nevada in a piece titled “Huellas De Arte Hispano”.

In her a post on her Facebook account celebrating the win, Yaimee credits her husband and colleagues at Telemundo for supporting her dreams and career path; as well as her production team and the artists that allowed her to tell their story. She dedicates her win to her parents.
