FIU Association of Black Journalists

The Lee Caplin School of Journalism & Media is currently recruiting students interested in starting an official University chapter of the National Association for Black Journalists (NABJ). The formation of this chapter on our campus comes at a critical time in journalism. The country is growing more and more diverse, yet America’s newsrooms continue to underrepresent Black Americans and people of color.

Founded in 1975, The National Association of Black Journalists is committed to strengthening ties among Black journalists, student journalists, journalism educators and media professionals. Part of NABJ’s mission is to help bring more Black journalists into the nation’s newsrooms. They hold one of the biggest minority job fairs in the country during their annual conference and offer regular training and career advice.

Those interested in being part of the NABJ should complete the NABJ Interest Form.

Society of Professional Journalists(SPJ)

The Society of Professional Journalists at Florida International University is an official campus chapter of SPJ – a national organization determined to protect and improve the freedom of the press.

SPJ-FIU members are dedicated to a free press and recognize that accurate, fair and balanced journalism is essential to American liberties and the concept of self-government as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.

SPJ-FIU’s mission is to foster excellence among young journalists in the South Florida community. SPJ-FIU wants to inspire successive generations of curious and passionate students to become committed journalists.

SPJ-FIU members recognize that today’s digital era has changed the future of the industry for good, so they work toward bridging the gap between traditional news values – which, if lost, pose a serious threat to the freedom of Americans – and creating compelling and content rich multimedia news packages.

If you are a student at FIU who wants to learn real world journalism – not just lessons in a classroom – join us!

Though there are no GPA or major requirements, board members must become official, paying members of SPJ. Everyone involved is encouraged to join, however. Meetings are held on a biweekly basis either in-person in the Media Hub (AC2 132) or via Zoom.
